dear System Providers, battery manufacturers
and VPP operators,

We are writing to inform you in advance that the Home Battery Scheme subsidy levels and cap will be decreasing on Wednesday 15 April 2020.

The new subsidy levels and cap will be publicly announced on Friday 6 March 2020, providing all South Australians six week’s notice of the change.

All System Providers will receive notice of the new subsidy levels and cap on Thursday 5 March 2020 ahead of the public announcement.

This approach will provide you with six weeks to finalise sales with customers at the current subsidy level and cap, and implement any required business changes.

The subsidy uptake has significantly increased in recent months, with over 7,000 subsidies now approved. Approximately 79 megawatt hours of storage capacity is now committed to under the Scheme - over 60% of the current capacity of the Hornsdale Power Reserve – the biggest battery in the world.

We are also pleased to see virtual power plant programs growing in South Australia with seven now available for households to choose from; providing consumers with additional benefits, and in many cases providing grid stability to the state.

The South Australian Government will be monitoring uptake throughout the year and further incremental reductions in the subsidy may occur before the end of the year.

How can System Providers ensure that their customers receive the current subsidy levels?

Subsidies that are conditionally approved before Wednesday 15 April 2020, will be eligible for the current subsidy levels ($500 per kWh / $600 per kWh non-concessional) and cap ($6,000). Subsidy applications lodged on Wednesday 15 April onwards will be subject to the new subsidy.

  • The customer has received conditional approval for their subsidy within the Ratesetter platform by midnight, Tuesday, 14 April 2020

  • The approved home battery system is installed within the timeframes outlined in the Scheme’s Subsidy Terms of 12 months for new builds and 6 months for all other properties.
Kind Regards
Home Battery Scheme Team
